Canadian aluminum from Quebec to go on our future BMW SUVs in Calgary
April 28 2023,
BMW is all set to source aluminum from Quebec, starting as early as 2024. After signing a memorandum of understanding with Rio Tinto, BMW confirmed that their source is an effort to reduce the carbon footprint from CO2-intensive materials such as aluminum. The reason they plan to source from Quebec is that this is a hydro-powered facility which reduces CO2 emission by almost 70% in comparison to conventional aluminum manufacturing.
Looking to the Future
The aluminum sourced from Quebec will initially be used only in Spartanburg, which is a South Carolina plant for the automaker. This plant focuses on building the BMW X3, X4, X5, X6, X7, and XM crossovers. Joachim Post, a member of the management board at BMW and the person responsible for the deal going through, released a statement.
It said that BMW has certain goals it would like to achieve, and lowering CO2 emissions is one of them. A little extra effort and the use of innovative materials can go a long way in helping BMW lower its carbon footprint. This is even before the car is handed over to the customer.
The agreement between BMW and Rio Tinto focuses on several key pointers. This includes the use of hydroelectric power and a high percentage of a secondary material that will help lower CO2 emissions.
