With a complex lineup of vehicles running on different fuel types, the Bavarian brand intends to live up to its sentiment, giving drivers the power of choice over their cars. The brand is one of few automakers not planning to stop production of combustion-type engine vehicles, believing the world won't be ready for a fully electric vehicle concept within the next decade.
Why Is the Change Happening?
The new naming strategy will help provide clarity to drivers. The planned change is that non-electric cars will lose the "i" from the end of their names, starting with the 2024 models. Believed to lead the way with this change is the next generation X3 and 1 Series, which are expected to enter production around July and August.
The New Line of Gas-Powered BMW Cars
The new 1 Series, Codenamed F70, is initially planned to come with 118 and quad-pipe M135 options. Notably, the diesel engine options will maintain their "d" lettering, which ends their name. The current model is, however, rumoured to skip the Life Cycle Impulse and move on to the fourth generation.
A Step Towards Clarity and the Future
With many plans in the works, including a full-fat X3 M, there's a lot to come in the near future. While this name change won't impact performance, it's still a step forward.
