For the BMW product lineup, performance comes in all shapes and sizes. Whether it’s the core lineup of BMW’s vehicles, the M Performance models, or the fully focused M cars, the blue-and-white roundel carries that clear goal of performance in every BMW. That goal is building fun-to-drive cars with engaging performance, elegant user interfaces and excellent build quality. For the last BMW model, the 2 Series Gran Coupe, it may be the smallest four door sedan BMW currently builds but successfully features the essence of the BMW brand.
The new 2 Series Gran Coupe is built on the same platform as the BMW X1 and X2 with the latest screen layout and iDrive interface from the latest X5 or X7. The 2 Series Gran Coupe is offered in two specifications, the 228i and M235i models. The 228i is available with xDrive all-wheel-drive whereas the M235i has xDrive as standard. Both of these models features a 2.0L twin-scroll turbocharged engine, tuned to produce different power figures. For the 228i, those figures are 228 horsepower and 258 lb/ft of torque. For the M Performance M235i, it produces 301 horsepower and 332lb/ft of torque. For all versions of the 2 Series Gran Coupe, the engine sends its power through ubiquitous 8-speed ZF transmission. The M235i features silver paddles behind the steering wheel to provide more involvement if the driver so chooses. For the 228i models, the optional M Sport Package will not only bring this feature to the cabin, but will additionally provide the heated leather-wrapped M steering wheel, the upgraded brake calipers and an exclusive 19’’ wheel design. Other premium features available in the 2 Series Gran Coupe include a panoramic sunroof, parking sensors, a harmon/kardon sound system and much more.
The 2 Series Gran Coupe also features the current interior design language of the latest BMW products. This includes the iDrive interface and the gear selector housed within a smartly organized cluster in the centre console, customizable ambient lighting and a very accommodable cockpit despite the Gran Coupe occupying the subcompact sedan class. The graphics are impressive with high-resolution animations and snappy responses from touch or from the iDrive rotary wheel.
The 2 Series Gran Coupe may represent the starting point for some BMW customers as the size and cost will be most attractive to younger buyers with a desire to own stylish and high-quality products. The 2 Series Gran Coupe will impress those entering the segment and serve a good jumping-off point to enter the BMW world and then aspire to own the larger vehicles when the time comes.
